ChatGPT for Marketing Brainstorming

I’ve seen several content creators and marketing specialists express concern with the poor quality output of long-form writing on ChatGPT. Today, I’m writing to remind you that as a LLM, your AI assistant can be more than an editor.

Using existing marketing materials and a little bit of time and energy, you can build a large enough knowledge base to inform ChatGPT about your company’s marketing strategy. From there, even those without plugins or paid software can accomplish this task.

Start with your favorite marketing materials. You know, the good ones you reuse over and over because they seem to get the messaging right? Start there. Divide your content out into categories that make sense to your company. I used categories like:

  • Mission
  • Vision
  • Service Lines
  • Core Competencies
  • History
  • Clients
  • Partnerships
  • Marketing Voice (here I used some phrasing that was standard from our website)

I also used some additional marketing collateral that was specific to my case. You can even start by asking ChatGPT for some advice.

Prompt: What kind of information do you need in order to create a SWOT analysis for my business?

After creating your “knowledge database” in Excel, next you have to manually input it into ChatGPT. If you have plugins or have curated software that allows uploads of documents, you could do that instead.

It’s likely that your information is going to be too long to upload in one shot, so instead to save time and processing power, we can ask ChatGPT to respond to us with “ok” until we’ve completed the upload:

Once the upload is complete — have fun! There are so many interesting conversations you can have with ChatGPT at this point with all your marketing loaded in. Some of the suggested prompts I came up with were:

  • Perform a SWOT analysis on this marketing plan.
  • What other companies have similar products?
  • Where does my company stand out?
  • What unique features does my company have that others don’t?
  • Are there opportunities for growth if I expand? If so, what areas would you suggest?
  • What are some slogans we could use for our company?
  • Who might our best target audience be?
  • How can I improve our brand?

I hope this little bit of information was helpful for you beginners out there. I know it can be overwhelming at first, but once you build the confidence to dive in deeper, you’ll find so many more ways to engage with your own marketing inside of ChatGPT!
