Recently, I embarked on a journey to update my professional portfolio. My friend in human resources gave me critical feedback on the format of my portfolio that I needed to modernize my approach. Years ago, I carried a heavy binder with color-coded tabs breaking down the various categories of communication I have helped with over my career as a communication specialist.

I started with this Leslie Knope-style portfolio after struggling to portray the large range of skills I had within the communication field, especially on the spot during an interview. When you’ve created nearly every type of content possible, how do you always put forward the writing samples that will speak to the skills needed for a specific client?

When I started applying to digital-based that required online interviews, I changed my format to customized PDFs. Before sending writing samples or portfolios over, I carefully chose which samples the employer might want to see. This allowed me to speak directly to the up-front needs of the company in need of help.

Because of this perceived need to customize my information, I avoided hosting a portfolio online. This gave me the control I felt I needed to customize which work I was showcasing per application or proposal. So when my friend said it was…
