It’s undeniable that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can increase productivity, reduce errors, and even increase creativity for content creators, making it a valuable tool. However, professionals everywhere are debating the role of AI and its role in industry standards. Is this a dream come true or a nightmare?

Automating Creativity Through Manual Inputs
It’s important to first point out that AI writing tools are not a replacement for human input. While tools like ChatGPT and Jasper (and new integrations like Canva’s Magic Write) are easy to learn, the content produced from a single prompt should be considered a starting point or outline. While AI algorithms can provide impressive drafts, it is only with the professional touch of someone who understands the complexities of wordsmithing that quality work can be created.

AI algorithms work based on the data and algorithms they are trained on, meaning that they cannot produce truly original or innovative content that draws from human experience, emotions, and cultural context. That is, unless you provide it with those details. Users can manipulate the output responses of AI by inputting data in a way that is designed to produce the desired outcome. This is often referred to as "training" the AI model. By feeding the AI model with specific types of data, users can influence the way the model interprets and responds to that data.

For example, in natural language processing (NLP), users can “train” an AI language model by providing it with a large amounts of text that reflects the language and style they want the model to mimic. By analyzing this text and learning from it, the AI model can generate responses that are more likely to align with the desired style and tone. This is especially useful for those in careers that rely on remaining consistent in messaging and branding.

A Communication Specialist Tool
It’s understandable that those in the communication-based industries are worried about the professional implications of AI Automated Content (AIaC). AI algorithms can provide unbeatable scalability, reach, efficiency, and cost savings. It’s clear that the benefits are like no other communication tool that’s ever been deployed. But rather than fear this change, what if we embraced it? There are significant benefits to embracing AI technology in our field and I want to suggest that we consider this viewpoint when judging these new processes.

AIaC is one of the most compelling reasons I’ve found to continue to build a career in the communications field. Internal and external communications alike both serve as a temperature gauge for success in most companies. Those with good communication and professional marketing will excel while those with poor communication and inadequate marketing will likely fail. As an employee tasked with improving communication, it’s not always easy to make changes overnight or teach old dogs new tricks when it comes to training staff on branding initiatives. This is where training an AI language model can be extremely useful.

Using AI to Adapt to Changes
Imagine if critical changes to the company’s boilerplate language could be instantly integrated into all branded communications? A small change in the company’s verbiage can take months to incorporate across all communications, leaving your coworkers frustrated and confused during the conversion. With AI tools, documentation can be updated quickly and efficiently, new concepts can be integrated into existing documentation, and guidelines can be instantly incorporated for those using the AIaC software within the team.

Branding Continuity
If you’ve spent any time at all as a communication specialist with branding responsibilities you know the horror of a coworker who likes to create their own documentation. AI tools can be programmed to create high quality content that meets your branding guidelines and pre-set glossary of branding terms.

But, what about SEO? There are so many articles floating around the internet right now suggesting that AI will “kill” your SEO. In some ways, these articles aren’t far from the truth. These authors recognize that there’s a movement to mass create documentation using AIaC and many are not going past the initial step to customize their content. However, that does not mean that all AIaC is not optimized for SEO.

If you’re using it right, AI can help you optmize your content for SEO. An AI language model can be trained to identify and incorporate specific keywords or phrases that are important for SEO, making sure your content is easily discoverable by search engines to reach a wider audience.

Let’s look at an example.

I put this paragraph into a brand new ChatGPT conversation:

I then asked the AI to “Optimize this paragraph for SEO with these keywords: Artificial Intelligence, content creation, marketing tools.”

Still a little stale, but it properly optimized my paragraph for SEO. Depending on how I was going to use this paragraph, I might ask it to change the tone, write more casually, expand and write a blog post, or maybe create a list of bullet points about this topic like this:

I can even go as far as to write the Facebook post promoting this blog article:

Or a Tweet:

Would I post either of these on my actual social media accounts? Absolutely not. But do they give me a head start on creating content I would post? YES! That’s the point of AIaC. To help guide you in the right direction while providing an analytical approach to ensuring content accuracy, SEO optimization, and overall brand continuity.

The Start of Something New
Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing content creation with more tools being created every day to help create, improve, and optimize content. While AI-assisted content creation (AIaC) offers remarkable potential for enhancing content, it’s important to recognize that it’s not a complete solution for all of a company’s content needs. Professionals who understand the complexities of communication can use these tools to significantly improve the quality and quantity of their company’s message. By striking the right balance between AI and human input, companies can create effective, authentic content that resonates with their target audience.
